Starting drums as a teenage in Maryland, early studies included lessons with Joe Dougherty (Roger Miller, Grass Roots) and Coco Rousell (Happy the Man). After completing a bachelors degree in classical percussion at the Univeristy of Maryland under the tutalage of Ron Barnett (National Opera), John went to the New England Conservatory of Music for a Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies. At NEC he studied with many jazz notables, including Ra-Kalam Bob Moses, Fred Buddha (Boston Pops), Joe Maneri, Jimmy Giuffre, George Garzone, and Dave Holland. After moving to New York, the education has continued with all of the amazing collaborators that John has had the honor to work with!
